About Us

What is the Muslim Sports Council?

The Muslim Sports Council are a charity set up to recognise the needs, value and contribution of Muslims in sport. There is much to celebrate; as well as challenges to overcome.

We act as an advisory body with our partners and provide guidance on many aspects related to making Islam compatible within sport.

It is evident that Muslims are an under-represented group in sport and MSC aim to fill the gap in disseminating knowledge, and providing pragmatic solutions for athletes and clubs in order for them to practice their faith within their sporting career.

Who We Are

MSC aim to remove the obstacles athletes may face by developing a structure and framework for them to perform at their highest peak without having to compromise on their faith, lifestyle and commitment to their profession.

MSC is not limited to benefitting Muslims alone but aims to be a part of the wider struggle of fighting discrimination at all levels and promote diversity, equality and social cohesion.

Islam is seen to be one of the most misunderstood religions, and with a Muslim population in the UK well over 2.5 million, there is an appetite to engage, educate and interact with people in sport so that faith can become a vehicle for positive change.

What We Do

Our aim is to be an advisory body for athletes and sporting organisations.

Our services are split into four main parts as detailed in the next section:

– Awareness

– Education

– Development

– Consultancy

Our History

The Muslim Sports Council came to life in 2012 when two committed sports fans had the vision of creating an organisation that promotes Islam through sport.

It is without that doubt that Muslims are under-represented in sport, in terms of providing a consistent standard across the board to help practice their faith with their sporting profession. For this reason, the year 2012 saw us having a number of informal meetings with high profile sports authorities, as well as athletes that validated the need to represent athletes’ religious requirements within sport.

We then saw it as an opportunity to widen the spectrum of under-representation and help the bigger cause of fighting discrimination in race, gender and disability for the public benefit. Our identity is Muslim but our cause is for humanity.

As it transitioned into 2013, this development of our strategy enabled MSC to build long-term relationships with a variety of bodies and individuals that have similar objectives. Other members came on board which developed our Research strategy on ethnic minorities in sport and we were invited to multiple global events that enhanced the profile of MSC.
